I’m more than a little interested in the card variety and looking to find somewhere local to play it, but the tile version is even more intriguing. If you have tiles, does everyone at the table see them all, all of the time?

When I originally learned this game, I was told that there was some sort of story that makes the ranking of the tiles make sense. Apparently it was some sort of Chinese thing? Something about how the tiles represent certain images (H10 was a flower I think?) that have value in Chinese culture. I really don't remember. Anybody know what the deal is behind the tile rankings?
